CHAPTER 8

“WHAT THE HELL is going on?” I shouted when we reached Jenna.

“I… I don’t know, she was over there…” Jenna pointed to a tree nearby, “… and suddenly, she was gone. I went looking for her everywhere, but I couldn’t find her.”

Scott sniffed activating his Tracer ability, and we followed him as he walked a few feet to the side, crouching low. My heart nearly stopped beating when I realized what he was looking at—drops of blood on the ground.

“Gina’s?” Dylan asked.

“Hard to tell. I’m not that familiar with her scent.”

“Is this hers?” I turned around to see Cassie lifting a shiny object—the ring I’d given Gina only minutes before.

“Yes,” I answered in a dark tone. “She must have dropped it on purpose.”

“Why would she do that?”

“Because she knew Scott could trace her,” Dylan replied, handing the ring to Scott who sniffed it a few times.

“The scent is the same,” Scott concluded. “The blood is hers.”

“Jesus…” What the hell had I been thinking leaving her alone in the woods? Jimmy had said to stick together. Gina was hunted in this world, and I’d let her out of my sight.

“I can follow her trace. She can’t be far.” Scott took the lead while we fell in line behind him.

“Do you think the Hunters are behind this?” Jenna asked in a slightly frightened tone.

“Why would they take a Roe?” Dylan argued. A Roe who was gifted with two powers that, combined, were more powerful than anything in existence, I added mentally. “Crimes also happen outside the Roe world…” he mumbled as an afterthought.

“Not this time,” Scott threw in. “I can smell them. Definitely Roes.”

“Where?”

Scott sniffed the air and made a sour face. “Not sure. The air is too salty.”

“Guys, open your eyes,” Cassie chided, pointing downward. There were traces in the sand that looked as if someone had been dragged over the ground, and a pang of fear nearly made me double over. I could never forgive myself if anything happened to Gina. I was supposed to protect her, and I’d lost her faster than I could blink. “This doesn’t look so abandoned, what do you say?”

An old beach house on pillars built halfway in the water could be seen in the distance. The roof looked as if a puff of wind would blow it away any second, and the balcony threatened to collapse on the next wave crashing in.

Distinct voices reached us when we approached. “Gina’s here,” Scott confirmed, and I braced myself for breaking down the door, but Dylan grabbed my arm.

“We should check this out first.”

“Yeah, let’s take the first floor,” Cassie said to Scott, and they both took off.

Dylan turned the doorknob and shot me a skeptical look when it clicked open. What were the odds that we’d walked into a trap?

Clicks echoed from behind us when we slunk in, and I slowly turned to see two Roes—their corded necks indicating they were Fighters—pointing guns at us. Okay, definitely a trap.

“Get off me!” Scott complained from somewhere, and another armed guy shoved Scott inside.
